But first…

What is our ‘psyche’?

According to the dictionary, Psyche is defined as: “the human soul, mind, or spirit”. So not just the mind, and not just the soul, but the entirety of our invisible parts- our soul, spirit, and mind, our feelings, thoughts, intuitions, connection to the divine, self knowing, and so much more.

This broader definition is exactly why I chose the word ‘psyche’ for this project. I am a psychologist by training, but also a yogi, and an artist. Learning practical actions to respond to certain emotions or behaviors is super useful, but without a grounding in a connection to the divine, life might feel meaningless. Likewise, tending to our connection to the divine (whatever that is for you), and learning to hear and live a spirit led life, may bring deep fulfillment and meaning, but can sometimes leave us with holes in our knowledge of how to respond to difficult emotions, or challenging situations in our or our children’s lives.

We need both. And children need both too. Tending to our emotions and learning how to deal with having a human mind, actually allows the connection to the divine and to our spirit to flourish. And one of the best ways to learn, especially for children, is through story and music. It is said that stories have something for children at whatever level they are at and that the same story will have different meaning for a child throughout their life. So the way a child hears the story of Cinderella when they are 2 will be totally different than when they are 10, but at both ages they will glean something pertinent to their life journey.

This podcast is meant to be entertaining for kids. It is meant to be stories and music that children will enjoy listening to, but that will also introduce tangible skills for dealing with being a thinking, feeling person in the world. These stories and songs also can remind us adults about simple tangible strategies for dealing with emotions (both ours and our kids), and they can give us ideas of how to help talk to our kids about what they are experiencing. I loved having something that I could put on for my kids to listen to (not watch!) that inspired their imagination and captivated them for a time, and I loved it even more when these stories introduced an important lesson or idea. I truly believe entertainment can be fun AND useful!
